AI Enabled Asset Management & Covid-19

Aug 19, 2020

The development of AI enabled asset management tools began well before the current Covid-19 pandemic started, and the use of such tools will persist long after the pandemic has run its course. Nevertheless, some of the capabilities of AI enabled asset management tools such as our Energy.ML platform are even more valuable to operators given the current operating limitations imposed by the pandemic. Some of these challenges, and how they are mitigated by Energy.ML are discussed below.

Office Staff Working Remotely

Most wind and solar operators now have some or most of their teams working from a remote location. Many of these staff worked in a central location prior to the pandemic, and used tools that were linked to a location, such as a wall of monitors or a firewall limited analytics tool. The Energy.ML platform provides complete access to all relevant data streams with a web browser, tablet, or smart phone, from wherever an internet or cellular connection is available.

Limited Site Access

Many operators have limited access to their projects in order to reduce the risk of Covid-19 transmission. The ability to diagnose and resolve issues remotely becomes even more valuable in these circumstances. The Energy.ML platform is able to diagnose many such issues remotely, some of which can also be resolved remotely, such as yaw misalignment.

Lower Energy Pricing

A reduction in energy consumption during the pandemic has resulted in lower pricing for merchant power projects, reducing project revenue. This reduction in revenue increases the need for the operational efficiency improvements that AI enabled asset management platforms such as Energy.ML provide.

Supply Chain Disruptions

The lead time for many components such as transformers and large bearings has increased due to the pandemic. Accurate and timely predictions of future component failures allow operators to place component orders well in advance of component failure, limiting the down time and lost production that can occur while awaiting for replacement components. The Energy.ML platform can accurately predict main bearing and pitch bearing failures 6 to 12 months in advance, allowing operators to get these long lead components on order and arrange for a crane, minimizing downtime and lost production.
